Professor Laurence Lovat is a leading Consultant Gastroenterologist based at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust and Reader in Gastroenterology & Laser Medicine at University College London (UCL). Professor Lovat's specialist interests lie in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of upper gastrointestinal cancer, as well as conditions affecting the food pipe such as reflux, indigestion and Barrett's disease. He also offers treatment for patients with irritable bowel syndrome and carries out endoscopy procedures.

Professor Lovat graduated from UCL with a medical degree, as well as a first class honour degree in Nutrition, in 1987. Owing to his academic excellence, he was awarded a Research Training Fellowship by the Medical Research Council (MRC), which led to his PhD at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital. In 1999, Professor Lovat was appointed as a consultant at University College Hospital and a senior lecturer at UCL.

Professor Lovat shares a strong passion for research and is committed to driving innovation in the field of gastroenterology. At an early stage in his career, he received an esteemed research training award, which led to his PhD. Based on the high quality of his research centred on minimally invasive treatment for the prevention and treatment of oesophageal cancer and the complications of acid reflux disease, Professor Lovat was awarded a professorship at UCL, and became the first Head of the Research Department for Tissue and Energy. He has also widely published in his field, with publications in notable scientific journals, such as Nature. Professor Lovat is also the lead investigator for the UK National HALO Patient Registry, UK-wide registry of all patients with dysplasia (pre-cancerous changes) and early cancer in Barrett’s oesophagus being treated with HALO radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
