Mr. Pranav Somaiya is a Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon based in London, working within one of Europe's largest Trusts. He sees patients across the full range of vascular diseases, including aortic, carotid artery, upper and lower limb arterial, lymphatic, and venous disease. His special interests include stroke surgery and complications arising from diabetes. He performs both open surgery and minimally invasive (keyhole) therapies, such as aneurysm and laser vein surgery.Mr. Somaiya is highly active in surgical education, serving as the Clinical Lead for the Surgical Skills Programme at the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSE). This programme encompasses over 150 courses run nationally and internationally. He has been a tutor and examiner at the University of Sheffield, Kings College London, and the Charles Clifford Dental School, Sheffield. He also teaches on seven postgraduate courses in General Surgery and Trauma organized by the RCSE and represents the RCSE on the curriculum committee of the Inter-Collegiate Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) Course.In the realm of Quality Improvement (QI), Mr. Somaiya has been instrumental in setting up several impactful QI projects across three different hospitals. These include one of the UK's early One Stop Venous Clinics (OSVC) for managing varicose veins and the development of Next Generation Surgical Clinics (NEGSC) for patient management. He has also implemented QR codes to streamline patient information across multiple platforms, with additional projects in the pipeline.Mr. Somaiya's PhD research led to the development of a rapid diagnostic test for micro-organisms using MS proteomics, patented in Europe and America. He has also developed rapid diagnostic tests for C. difficile and MRSA, receiving research grants from the BUPA foundation and Pfizer Anti Infective Research Programme. His work has been recognized with the Science Engineering and Technology award from the Houses of Parliament and highlighted in the audio-visual campaign of Antibiotic Action UK.
